Deputy Minister Alexandra Abrahams
Alexandra Abrahams is the Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy of the Republic of South Africa, appointed to the portfolio on 1 July 2026. She brings extensive political and government experience spanning Parliament, executive government and provincial administration.
Born and raised in Cape Town, she attended Westerford High School before completing an postgraduate degree in Political Science at Stellenbosch University. Her academic grounding in politics and governance has shaped a career focused on accountable government, effective institutions and public policy that delivers measurable improvements in people’s lives.
Her political career began during the Democratic Alliance’s 2009 Western Cape election campaign, after which she served in the Western Cape Ministry of Social Development. In 2019, she was elected to the National Assembly, where she served on the Portfolio Committee on Social Development and the Joint Constitutional Review Committee, developing significant experience in parliamentary oversight, legislation and constitutional governance.
In November 2025, Abrahams was appointed Deputy Minister
of Trade, Industry and Competition. In this role, she championed a more competitive and investment-friendly economy, with a focus on regulatory reform, market-oriented policies and creating the conditions for businesses to invest, grow and create jobs.
As Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, Abrahams is focused on making electricity more affordable, reliable and accessible to South Africans. Her priorities include accelerating electricity sector reform, expanding investment in generation and grid infrastructure, strengthening competition and private sector participation, and protecting critical electricity infrastructure from vandalism, theft and illegal connections.
Her approach is grounded in the conviction that energy security is fundamental to South Africa’s economic future. A reliable and competitive electricity system can lower the cost of doing business, unlock investment and industrial development, and support sustained economic growth and job creation.
