BIOFUEL
In December 2006, a draft Biofuels Industrial Strategy was approved by Cabinet for public consultation. The public consultation process involved workshops and meetings at both national and provincial levels, as well as consultations with organised industry, farmers, communities, non-governmental organisations, and provincial government departments.
Comments from stakeholders were duly considered and incorporated into the draft Strategy. In December 2007, Cabinet approved the National Biofuels Industrial Strategy.
The approved Strategy proposed a 2% biofuels penetration of the existing fuel pool by 2013. The 2% target was expected to:
- Contribute to energy security.
- Create approximately 25,000 jobs in rural farming.
- Achieve balance-of-payments savings of approximately R1.7 billion.
