The “Private Sector Energy Efficiency” Project (PSEE) aims to improve energy efficiency in commercial and industrial companies in South Africa through the provision of various services that assist companies in identifying and implementing energy saving measures. The project which is under the umbrella of the UK-SA bilateral relationship will contribute to the South African government’s strategy for reducing energy demand. The PSEE Project is governed by a multi-stakeholder Steering Committee led by the Department of Energy.
The project has a target to provide support to a certain number of small, medium and large companies. The level and nature of support to be provided will depend on the size of business and annual energy spend.
Large Company Support
The project aims to support about 60 large companies with annual energy spend over R45m across the country with up to 60 days of consulting support to provide a holistic range of services including energy consumption assessment, development of energy management systems and strategies, capacity building, identification of energy saving opportunities and business case development for access to investment. This range of services will be informed by where each company finds itself on its own roadmap to improved energy efficiency and hence adopt a Strategic Energy Management approach. For large companies, the support will follow 60/40 cost sharing approach with 60% contribution coming from the PSEE.
Medium Company Support
About 1000 medium sized companies with annual energy spend between R750k and R45m will receive fully subsidized 4 days of direct onsite consulting support which will include energy consumption assessment, identification of energy saving opportunities and follow up support which will enable companies to implement some of the identified energy saving opportunities.
Small Businesses
The PSEE will assist small businesses to adopt and implement energy efficient best practices into their business through an informative website and helpline. The project will also conduct energy efficiency awareness workshops.
